The Yongnuo speedlite Transmitter ST-E2 in everyday use

Lighting changes a photograph or a video more than almost any other single factor. Even a modest light, placed well, produces a cleaner result than an expensive camera in a poorly lit room.

What matters in practice is how much light it puts out, how even that light is, and how easily you can position it. Softer, larger light sources flatter faces; smaller, harder ones create sharper shadows.

Lighting

• Improves video calls, photos and recordings
• Suitable for indoor use where room light is limited

Practicality

• Positions where you need it
• Straightforward to set up

Getting started

Place the light slightly above eye level and to one side rather than straight on. Direct frontal light flattens a face; a small angle brings back some shape. If the light has adjustable brightness or colour, set it to match the other light in the room. Mixing warm room lighting with a cold light source is the most common cause of odd skin tones.

Who should buy this

Anyone filming indoors in the evening, when daylight is no longer doing the work.
